My Mexico

We grew mainly avocados, lots of varieties of chillies, peaches, oranges, pomegranate, nuts and guavas. My parents traded avocados, chillies and nuts mainly. I used to do my bit by going to the local market and sell avocados and chillies or exchange them for things we didn’t have like tomatoes! - my mum was very proud of me.

In my teens I had a surfing stall on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. I travelled to the city of Guadalajara to stock up with reef sandals, wax, funky t-shirts, and all sort of accessories for the keen surfers.

More recently, I imported Mexican silver jewellery to the UK and traded under the name of ‘deseo jewellery’. ‘Entrepreneurship’ must be in my genes! The craftsmanship and creativity that goes in the jewellery is much to be admired, and it gave me a warm glowy feeling that in some small way I contributed to bettering the livelihood of a few of my countrymen and women by giving them a fair deal for their work.
